Start as a single cell. End as us.

CellZ is an arcade evolution game you play in the browser. Steer your cells around the arena, gobble glowing molecules and watch full cells split. Grow the colony to its goal and it evolves into a 3D voxel organism: one of 60 species spanning about 4 billion years of life.

60 organisms, unlocked in order

  • Plants (10): early life and the first plants, from LUCA and stromatolites to Cooksonia and Magnolia
  • Fishes (15): from jawless Haikouichthys to Dunkleosteus, Tiktaalik, Megalodon and the Clownfish
  • Animals (35): early four-legged animals, dinosaurs like Stegosaurus and T. rex, mammals like Smilodon and the Woolly Mammoth, and the human line from Sahelanthropus and Lucy to Homo sapiens

Every organism comes with its era and a one-line fact. Educational-ish, but fun first.

Survive and adapt

  • Power-ups: Magnet, Turbo, Double Food, Mitosis (every cell splits at once) and Shield
  • Hazards: red spiky toxins and hungry predators. Lose every cell and it's extinction, so try the level again!
  • Mutations: after each organism, pick one of up to three random traits, such as Flagella, Chemotaxis or Thick Membrane. Traits level up and stay with you.
  • Codex: browse every species you've discovered and view its 3D model again

Controls

  • Move: mouse or touch (your cells swim toward the pointer), or WASD / arrow keys
  • Enter / Space: press the button on the open screen (Play, Continue, Try again)
  • P / Esc: pause menu (resume, restart the level, cell speed, Codex, credits)
  • M: mute / unmute  ·  C: open or close the Codex

Extras

  • Generative chiptune music (WebAudio) that changes key and scale with each era, plus synth sound effects and a mute button
  • Your progress, mutations, speed and mute settings save automatically in your browser
  • Works on desktop and phones
